Yorkshire Food & Drink Online- A Curated List

Yorkshire Food and Drink Online – Independent Producers and retailers .

Here are some of the best Yorkshire food and drink online producers and retailers. Local makers I return to again and again, all delivering nationwide so you can bring a taste of Yorkshire into your kitchen. If you have any others (Based in Yorkshire, online site and delivery nationwide), then let me know I love discovering new places.

These are not big brands. They are independent makers and merchants who care deeply about what they produce. Farmers, cheesemakers, brewers, bakers and growers whose work reflects the places they come from. Finding them has been one of the pleasures of running Happen Upon.

Buying this way is not just about good ingredients (though that matters). It’s about knowing where things come from, understanding how they’re made, and choosing to support people who work with skill and attention.

This is a hand-selected list of retailers I have bought from myself – not exhaustive, just carefully chosen. From everyday staples to things that feel like small treats, they offer food and drink that is made with care and meant to be enjoyed properly. I will add to it as I happen upon more

Take your time, explore a little, and see what you happen upon.

Drink Producers and Wine Importers – Doing something different

We do have vineyards in Yorkshire, and maybe I will recommend one but not yet

Mason’s Tea gin is my favourite (top tip if you fly from Leeds Bradford Airport they always have it in the duty free)

vinceramos – specialise in organic, vegan and biodynamic wines, import direct. Stocks a lot of restaurants

wayward – natural wine specialists. Born out of the Reliance a much missed institution in Leeds

Bakeries

Florian Poirot – an amazing baker first appeared in Malton now has a shop in York. Famous for macarons but I love his travel cake.

Betty’s – fat rascals, pikelets, yorkshire curd tarts. They are famous for a reason. Branches across Yorkshire perfect for afternoon tea. Their Ester eggs are always a joy to behold

Botham’s – purely for their Whitby lemon buns, but also Parkin, and Yorkshire Brack. Traditional baking at its best nothing fancy.

Butchers and Meat Suppliers

Havng worked with fine dining restaurants, I know where they get their meat supplies. This used to be trade only but recently they have opened their doors to all consumers.

Swaledale – do amazing meat and great limited editions working with chefs to produce specific products. I always buy their fennel tuscan sausages.

R and J Yorkshire’s Finest – Previously only wholesale they have their own woodland pigs and Beef, plus deer from the harewood estate. All packed in wool. Massive fan of their salt aged steaks, as are OX club and other great restaurants.

Herb-fed poultry – Really good chicken as used by many chefs

Lishmans of Ilkley the charcuterie at Lishmans is amazing, award winning, add to that the great meat. This is an online guide but if you do visit they do great hot sausages rolls or hot pork sandwiches with crackling and apple mmmm

Cheese

Online food and drink retailers of Yorkshire. This image shows a selection of cheeses on a wooden board.

We have lots of amazing award winning cheese in Yorkshire. And many great cheese shops. We use George and Joseph but the best in Yorkshire and probably in the country is Courtyard Dairy.

George & Joseph – my local cheesemongers but also award winning. Here you will find a beautiful Yorkshire cheese you will not have heard of Summerfield, a seasonal alpine cheese. Made by cheesemaker, Alistair Pearson and his team at Botton Creamery, in Botton Village on the North York Moors, Whitby.

Botton Village is part of the Camphill Village Trust, a social enterprise for people with disabilities. The village is fully self-sustainable and biodynamic, with each of the 130 residents having a job working on the farms; making and ageing cheese, growing their own produce, working in the shop, as well as making breads and preserves.

Local boy, Alistair moved to Germany where he learned his cheesemaking skills. He then returned to the village, and using the rich milk from their herd of 46 Dairy Shorthorns, started producing their first cheese; a traditional clothbound farmhouse cheddar, Dale End.

An Alpine-style cheese, with caramel, fermented fruit, nutty flavours.

Courtyard dairy – voted Cheesemonger of they year. Such an amazing place to visit too as it is in the middle of Nidderdale.

Chocolate

Lauden Chocolates – first bought from them when they sold at farmers markets, now they provide the Chocolates for 1st Class British Airways passengers.

Fish and Seafood

KC Caviar – Yorkshire Caviar! This was used in the restaurants as it is ethical, no kill , and well priced. They are leading the way in ethical caviar.

Fortune’s Kippers – A trip to Whitby has to include a stop off at Fortunes. A small shed smoking kippers it is wonderful. They are very old school and only take cash and don’t sell online but had to mention them

Food Boxes – Chef at home

Made in Oldstead – Nationwide delivery for Michelin Chef Tommy Banks .Really good menus for you to prepare at home

Seasonal

Yorkshire Rhubarb – there used to be rhubarb trains from leeds to London the demand was so high. It is stunning and grown by candlelight (jan – Feb only)
