From celebrated gardens, quiet retreats to independent nurseries packed with hard-to-find perennials, this guide is for serious plant lovers rather than casual garden-centre browsing.
This list of the top 10 gardens and nurseries in Yorkshire has been chosen for offering something special. They are the places we return to repeatedly, the gardens that inspire us, calm us and delight us. They provide creative inspiration long after we leave. Let’s hope they inspire you too.
Yorkshire has many excellent garden centres, and established public gardens including RHS Garden Harlow Carr, Harewood House and numerous National Trust properties, but this list is slightly different.
Some are world-famous amongst gardeners. Others are small specialist nurseries with eccentric opening hours and unusual propagated plants. All are worth travelling to.

Top tip – It is worth keeping an eye on the National Garden Scheme, where private gardens open for a few days each year, often with unusual plants for sale and excellent homemade cake.
A word of warning: Yorkshire gardening starts later than the South of England. Many of these gardens are best visited from late April onwards, though several remain beautiful well into October thanks to grasses, seedheads and autumn colour.

Parcevall Hall
Is this my favourite Yorkshire garden? Perhaps. It feels unfair to choose, but we return here more than anywhere else.
Set in the Yorkshire Dales near Bolton Abbey, Parcevall Hall combines everything we love, peace, woodland, terraces, long views, surprising planting and a stunning location.
From the car park, the route climbs steeply through woodland and around a lake before revealing the terraced gardens, followed by an impressive rockery that mimics the landscape. The site has a sheltered south-facing aspect, and the planting is far richer than you might expect.
The rose garden, with its clipped yews and black benches, has quietly influenced our own garden.
There is also something deeply restorative about this place. Every visit reveals something different. It was my grandmother’s favourite garden too, which perhaps explains why it feels woven into family life for us.
Dog friendly. Small cafe. Limited plant sales.
Skyreholme, Skipton BD23 6DE
Scampston
Two great garden designers meet at Scampston.
First, Capability Brown shaped the wider parkland landscape in the eighteenth century. More recently, Piet Oudolf created one of the most important contemporary perennial gardens in Britain.
The walled garden is the star attraction. Inside the old walls, tree peonies and romantic planting suddenly give way to Oudolf’s bold modern landscape of clipped yews, grasses and reflecting pools.
His planting style helped define the New Perennial Movement, a naturalistic approach using ornamental grasses and long-season perennials valued for texture, structure and seedheads as much as flowers. You may recognise his work from New York’s High Line or London’s Olympic Park.
The wider estate is also worth exploring and is dog friendly, though the walled garden itself is not.
Excellent cafe and unusually good plant sales, many propagated from their own stock.
Scampston Walled Garden, Malton, YO17 8NG
York Gate
York Gate is close enough for us to visit repeatedly and we do. Often, we just pop in to peruse the plants or grab lunch at their cafe, both free to visit.
The garden itself is a domestic garden, around one acre, beautifully composed with woodland, water and gravel planting arranged in a sequence of intimate spaces. It belongs to the gardening charity Perennial and is beautifully curated..
The cafe deserves special mention too, serving genuinely good homemade food rather than standard garden centre fare.
It is not an all-day destination, but if you are anywhere near Leeds it is well worth seeking out.
Small, thoughtful and evolving.

Burton Agnes
Some gardens capture your heart because they are imperfect. They feel lived in and developed over time.
At Burton Agnes there is a sense of time passing from formal hedging to an abundant walled garden. It feels slightly eccentric and gloriously unconcerned with fashion.
The garden rooms still contain painted games from previous decades and there is an almost nostalgic atmosphere to the place. The warm East Yorkshire climate allows genuinely exuberant planting, with huge growth spilling through paths and then there is the water feature giving a magnificent grandeur.
Plants and produce are sold from the garden and there is often an excellent wood-fired pizza van.
Dog friendly and wonderfully atmospheric.

Stillinglfleet
You need commitment to visit Stillingfleet because the opening times are not simple, but that is part of its charm. Check the website. usually open every other weekend after 1pm.
This is still very much somebody’s home garden, and the attached nursery specialises in home-propagated plants. The plants are very good and some very unusual varieties which you can often see in the garden.
The garden is arranged in rooms and inspired us to plant shuttlecock ferns along one of our own shady banks.
We often combine a visit with nearby nurseries such as Vertigrow or Primrose Bank.

Helmsley walled garden
Helmsley Walled Garden is beautifully maintained and well worth visiting if you are exploring this part of North Yorkshire.
The planting is excellent and the views towards the castle are spectacular, though personally I tend to prefer gardens with slightly more wildness and drama.
Still, it remains a brilliant walled garden visit in Yorkshire and the castle makes a dramatic backdrop.

Specialist Independent Nurseries
Cliff Bank Nursery
A new nursery already developing a devoted following and getting bigger and better every year.
The owner previously worked as head gardener at York Gate and it shows. The planting combinations are thoughtful, unusual and perfectly suited to Yorkshire conditions.
Plants are propagated on site, and stock is often grown for the Chelsea Flower Show, so expect unusual varieties and excellent quality.
Probably our current favourite nursery in Yorkshire.
Harrogate Rd, North Rigton, Leeds LS17 0BZ
Vertigrow
Vertigrow is such a good size and has a great range of plants.
We have bought everything here from yew hedging to grasses, ferns and mature acers. If you need large quantities, specimen plants or trees suited to northern gardens, this is one of the best places in Yorkshire. Fortunately, they deliver.
We were first introduced to it by a landscape design lecturer and have been returning ever since.
Lawnswood House, Malton Rd, York YO32 9TL
Primrose Bank Nursery
Best known for snowdrops, though excellent for shade-loving plants generally.
Opening times are fine from March till end of May but June to August they become more sporadic because they spend much of the summer travelling to plant fairs and events, so always check before visiting.
Well worth combining with Stillingfleet or Vertigrow.
Dauby Ln, Kexby, York YO41 5LH
Hooton’s Walled Garden
This is a cheat as we haven’t been yet.
To be fair they only started selling plants in Autumn 2025 and they are based in Rotherham. However, Dean Charlton worked at Great Dixter and has opened this nursery with his father. It already looks pretty special, and we can’t wait to go visit.

Finally, a nod to Dove Cottage, which was our favourite nursery but closed it doors in 2025. They specialised in plants from the new perennial movement growing many plants direct from visiting Hummelo (Piet Ouldoffs garden). They would definitely have featured in our top 10 Gardens and nurseries in Yorkshire.
